Fragrant chi to cultivate a deep sense of stillness and inner connection

Fragrant chi or scent has the ability to influence our mood and our behaviour at a primal level. Nobel prize-winning scientific research has proven that our sense of smell directly impacts our limbic system; to those areas of our brain which porcess emotional expression, behaviour and sensation.

Our limbic system is said to set the tone for how we feel in any given moment. It is, in effect, our mind-body connection.

Our olfactory system holds a memory-bank of scents experieced over time and even some say, through the generations. When we encounter a new smell our brain immediately begins to process how we need to feel in response.

Scent and Memory

Scent triggers memories, asscoiations and evokes a physical response. For example the smell of something burning might trigger a flight response whereas the scent of baking bread might encourage feelings of comfort and homliness.

Intentional use of scent

Therefore intentional use of scent in the form of incense and aromatherapy for example, has the ability to engender atmosphere which in turn influences how we feel.

Throughout history our ancestors used scent to create a sense of ceremony and remind us of our connection to the sacred and the divine.  Ancient people gathered around ceremonial fires breathing in the “holy smoke” from local woods and resins. The modern word perfume comes from the Latin words per fumen – literally meaning “through the smoke”.

Incense

The burning of incense was thought to represent divine breath. A way for us to connect deeply with the divine. It was seen as the “exhaling” of smoke carrying with it our prayers and intentions out into the universe where it was inhaled by the Divine, who would then exhale back their blessings to us.

Frankincense for healing and connection to spririt

Frankincense resin was very commonly burned to create a comforting and healing effect on the body and soul. The resin is exuded from the tree when its bark is “injured” sealing the wound and protecting the tree from infestation or damage from the elements.

Frankincense essential oil (boswellia carterii) supports reflection, introspection and healing on all levels. It quiets the mind and supports our sense of inner calm and tranquility. Frankincense is said to “kindle our inner light” and create focused connection to and awareness of spirit.
